Do you have any idea where to start to find the perfect Costa Rica retirement location?
Every day, I get emails from future retirees who are thinking of retiring in Costa Rica and don’t know how to start their due diligence. Retiring in Costa Rica is not something you just do, but where to start? Finding the right retirement location is probably one of the most difficult tasks ahead of you. Hopping on a flight to Costa Rica, call a realtor to tour you around for free with the promise you will purchase real estate some day is not going to do it for you. Racing around like crazy without important information to make educated decisions doesn’t get you to the finish line, at least not in one piece.

Racing around like crazy without important information to make educated decisions doesn’t get you to the finish line either, at least not in one piece.
The internet allows us to give you a lot of information for free, which is so great about blogs. On The Easy Times, you find experiences of living in a foreign culture, suggestions on how to do this and how to do that as well as advantages and disadvantages of what you are planning to do. That is our gift to you and we hope, in return that you will purchase or rent Costa Rica real estate from us when you are ready to do so.
Planning to retire in 2 years
A couple of days ago, I received an email from Jane from Disneyland, Florida that said “I am planning on retiring in Costa Rica in about two years. We will be in San Jose on July 4 and July 5. How can you help me? We may rent first, then buy. We are still trying to decide.”
Another one, I received just today (I never received the first email he says he sent before) from John G in San Jose, California: “Hey, never heard of anyone today. Would like to know when these 2 properties are available. Also, need some questions answered since we have never been to Costa Rica. Thanks, John”
Your homework
Of course, it’s a great idea to just send an email to a real estate agent in Costa Rica. Then you can just suggest the agent give you an easy solution. And believe me, the solution is there, but it’s not an easy one. It needs a lot of reading and figuring out before you even decide to take the step to visit Costa Rica (and maybe other countries) to do the rest of your homework. Finding the right retirement location is probably your #1 task at hand.
All the answers in one
For those who want all the answers wrapped up in a short solution for all to see, I wrote an email to Jane and John:
Dear John
Thanks for your email. Are you going to be in Costa Rica for only two days? That is not enough time to find out if Costa Rica is the right country for you to spend your retirement. You can start by reading as many of our blogs as you can:
I’m sure you want to find the right retirement location. Unfortunately only you can do that for yourself. Once you have found the right retirement location, we can assist in finding the right property.
best regards,
Even more homework
We are a network of real estate agents in 31 locations in the country, from coast to coast. Check out this link to the different locations, so you can find out the right retirement location. I’m sure you want to look for one that will suit your lifestyle and budget. Each location has its own charm, amenities, advantages, and disadvantages, which might suit you or not suit you at all. Just looking at Costa Rica real estate online isn’t going to do anyone any good at all.
Describe your lifestyle
I know that is a lot of reading you have ahead of you. But it is necessary if you need to decide where to spend the rest of your life. If you email me a list of the amenities that are must to you or you describe your lifestyle, I can send you in the right direction. Then you will know where to start your adventure at what might be the retirement location you’re looking for.
Once you have found out which locations might suit you, rent a car and tour all those locations. If you’re not up to renting a car and drive on your own, we can recommend you take a Retirement Tour, but they have fixed dates and might not adjust to your schedule.
2 Years later
In two years, see if you are still ready to move to Costa Rica, let us know well ahead of time when you are coming. Show us which locations you are interested in and we’ll be happy to show you property for rent or for sale there.
I hope this helps
