Taking a walking tour in Costa Rica, as long as you do it when it’s not raining, is a great way to get outdoors and enjoy life. Before you spend all your free time indoors playing online casino games when you move here, think about taking a walking tour first.
GPSMYCITY is a website where you can create walking tours of over 1000 cities worldwide. So I decided to play around with this website and create my custom GPSMYCITY walking tour.
You can do this yourself; try it. It’s awesome! And you have an option for different cities in the co, so follow all the steps. First, click on the button “Create Your Own Walk.” This will allow you to select attractions that appeal to you.
Categories
You can select from the following categories:
- All Sights
- Must See
- Attraction and Landmarks
- Museum and Gallery
- Religious
- Food and Drink
- Disco and Nightclub
- Shopping
- Park and Outdoor
I will keep it at “All Sights” and pick items that interest me and see what happens.
Where to visit?
Let’s see … what should I add to my list?
Well, you can only select 15 items on your walking tour. There are more things that I want to add to my walking tour, but it looks like I will have to create a second walking tour. But let’s see what happens when I finish filling out the online form to create my custom walking tour.
I selected “Central Park” as my starting location since that is central.
It looks as if most of the attractions I chose are all located around the same area, except for Braulio Carrillo National Park, which is way off in a different location. So I will delete that item from my walking tour and visit Braulio Carrillo National Park on the second day of my trip.
After making those changes, I am going to recreate my map. I ended up with a custom walking tour of the final 14 locations, where the order is based on where the items are located and not how I selected them.
Final 14 locations
- Central Park
- Edificio Correos Central
- Museo Filatelico
- Museo de los Ninos
- Galería Namu
- Museo de Arte Costarricense
- Museo de Ciencias Naturales La Salle
- Estation Del Ferrocario al Atlantico
- Museo de Formas, Espacios y Sonidos
- Chieton Moren
- Museo Nacional de Costa Rica
- Libreria Lehmann
- Museo Historico Tecnologico
- Museo de la Comunidad Judia
Now I need to name my walk and enter my email address. I got an email (but it ended up in my spam folder). It’s easy to copy it to my main folder. Then I have to click on the link to complete my registration and click on the link to Google Play.
You download the app “GPSmyCity: Walks in 1K+ Cities”. General maps or other information is free. But if you want a turn-by-turn walking tour, either one of the pre-created ones or the one you created, you have to pay for it.
Subscription
You have several options for getting an annual subscription, but you’ll have to pay:
#1. For $12.99, you will get access to the full version functions in all the 480 city walks guides (London, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, etc.) included in this app for one year. Travel articles are not included in this subscription.
#2. For $12.99, you will get access to the full version functions in all the travel articles in 900+ cities worldwide (London, Rome, Paris, Tokyo, etc.) included in this app for one year. City walks guides are not included in this subscription.
#3. For $18.99, you will get access to the full version functions in all the 480 city walking guides plus travel articles in over 900 cities for one year. Together they cover over 1,000 cities worldwide
So if you want the travel guides and the walking tours, you need to pay the $18.99 subscription.
Worth it?
Is a GPSMyCity Subscription Worth it for my Costa Rica Trip? I will answer yes, but then I am one of those who likes to visit the hidden treasures of a city. Most pre-made tour groups or travel guides point you toward the direction of the major stuff, like the National Museum, etc. But sometimes it is fun to see the little things in a new city, like those not on every website’s “top 10 things that you must see in Costa Rica”. This app lets you see if visiting a certain city is worth your trip and pick the right sights.
Any negatives?
Are there any Negatives to GPSMyCity Subscription? They do not list people’s average time at a specific location. How long will it take to go through a stamp Museum on average? Without that info, you do not know if you are trying to put too much or little into your walking tour plan.
If you’re interested in sightseeing and getting to know the country better, we have a few suggestions for you.
